A welcome to the best in clubland

Welcome to the Canterbury website. We would like to explain just what the club is, and how (and why) it operates.

The first thing to understand is that the club is a non-profit organisation. The directors of the club , who must be members and are voted in by the members at annual meetings, act in a voluntary capacity.

The money the club generates is purely for the benefit of the members, by way of the facilities and the amenities provided, and for the community. The club returns significant amounts of money to various charities, community and sporting organisations in its' area - many of whom would not be able to exist without that support.

The club industry as it exists in NSW originated some 50 years ago as a means of bringing together common interest groups. The clubs supported that interest, in helping to run sporting organisations, ex-servicemen's  organisations and the like.

As they became more popular they became centres of their community, growing all the time in size and membership, and offering ever greater and more sophisticated amenities.

These days they are important entertainment facilities, used regularly by 54 percent of all adults in New South Wales, and at least once a year by some 80 percent.

But their basic reason for being has not changed. They remain non-profit organisations, with voluntary directors. They remain a centrepiece of support for a wide range of sporting, community and cultural groups, and for many charities who depend on them. They remain, as well, a centre of entertainment and social amenity for vast numbers of people.
